RAC WA is a purpose-led member organisation that reinvests its profits for the better of its members and the Western Australian community.
RAC bstreetsmart is RAC WA’s flagship road safety education event, held each year at RAC Arena Perth. The event is designed for Year 10 to 12 students and features a live crash re-enactment attended by emergency services, just as it would occur at a real crash site. Students also hear from speakers who have been directly impacted by road trauma, helping connect the re-enactment to the real-life consequences of unsafe decisions on the road.
TraumaSim has proudly supported RAC bstreetsmart for several years by delivering on-site moulage services for the crash re-enactment. Each year, the TraumaSim team looks forward to attending the event and contributing to its powerful road safety message.
For TraumaSim, this partnership is deeply valued. The injuries shown during the re-enactment, and the reactions they create in the stadium, are an important part of helping young people understand the consequences of road trauma. If this event helps save even one life, that contribution is worth it.
The Challenge
Young drivers continue to face significant risks on Western Australian roads and remain overrepresented in serious incidents.
RAC bstreetsmart aims to highlight the devastating consequences of risk-taking on the roads and empower students to make safer choices as young drivers, passengers and road users.
To create a meaningful and memorable learning experience, the event relies on realism. The crash re-enactment needs to feel authentic enough for thousands of students to understand that the consequences being shown are not abstract or distant — they are real outcomes that can happen to real people, families and communities.
The setting
RAC bstreetsmart is held annually at RAC Arena Perth. In 2026, more than 16,000 students attended the event across two days. Since RAC began hosting bstreetsmart in Western Australia in 2012, more than 125,000 students have attended.
The event brings together road safety education, emergency services, lived-experience speakers and a live crash re-enactment to help students understand the impact of distracted driving, speeding, drink and drug driving, and other risk-taking behaviours.
The TraumaSim solution
TraumaSim provides realistic injury simulation and on-site moulage services for the RAC bstreetsmart crash re-enactment.
The realistic injury simulations are central to the event’s impact, reflecting the real-life consequences of death and serious injury on Western Australian roads.
In the re-enactment, four characters sustain injuries of varying severity. The most significant depictions include:
- a person ejected through the windscreen and pronounced deceased at the scene
- a motorcyclist struck by a vehicle
- an individual seriously injured and trapped inside a vehicle
- additional injuries of varying severity across the crash scene
These life-threatening injury presentations help demonstrate the urgency, complexity and coordinated response required from emergency services personnel at a serious crash scene.
Why realism matters
For an event like RAC bstreetsmart, realism is not used for shock alone. It supports the educational purpose of the event by helping students connect emotionally and intellectually with the consequences of unsafe road behaviour.
Students in attendance often have a strong emotional response to the injury simulations, with audible reactions heard from thousands of young people watching the re-enactment. These responses demonstrate the realism of the injuries and the powerful impact of the presentation.
The authenticity of what students witness encourages them to reflect on the real-world consequences of risky behaviour on the roads, making the experience memorable, confronting and thought-provoking.
Outcomes
The realistic injury simulations help support RAC bstreetsmart’s broader road safety message by making the consequences of road trauma visible, immediate and difficult to ignore.
The re-enactment helps students understand that one decision can change many lives — not only for the people directly involved in a crash, but also for families, friends, emergency responders and the wider community.
Student feedback highlights the lasting effect of the presentation:
“The realistically gruesome scene of a car crash that showed the severity of being a careless driver and the effect it can have on your passengers had a lasting picture in my memory to this day.” — Year 10 female student
“The realistic injury simulations featured at RAC bstreetsmart are central to the event’s impact, reflecting the real-life consequences of death and serious injury on our roads.”
