Surf Life Saving NSW strengthens bleeding control training with TraumaSim

Surf Life Saving NSW delivers vital training and services across the community through SLS First Aid Training & Services. Their commercial services include professional lifeguards, event services, first aiders, paramedics and commercial training, with profits from fee-for-service training redirected back into supporting Surf Life Saving volunteers.

For TraumaSim, supporting Surf Life Saving NSW is a partnership we deeply value. In Australia, our beaches and waterways are part of everyday life. Whether people are swimming, surfing, boating, enjoying water sports, working near the coast or encountering marine hazards, the risks can be unpredictable and serious. Ensuring that lifesavers, emergency responders and trained community members have access to realistic, practical training is essential to helping protect both Australians and visitors.

The Challenge

Following changes to HLT training requirements several years ago, Surf Life Saving NSW identified a need for quality resources to support the teaching and assessment of life-threatening bleeding management

Training needed to move beyond theory and basic demonstration. Participants required hands-on resources that could help them practise critical interventions such as wound packing, tourniquet application and arterial bleeding control in a more realistic and meaningful way.

Surf Life Saving NSW delivers training across client workplaces, public and corporate settings, and trainer professional development opportunities across the state. Their advanced courses reach thousands of participants, including lifesavers, military personnel and emergency response personnel.

The TraumaSim solution

Surf Life Saving NSW integrated TraumaSim haemostatic trainers, tourniquets and tourniquet trainers into relevant training and assessment activities.

These products are used to support the simulation and management of life-threatening bleeding, helping trainers create more realistic learning environments and giving participants practical exposure to critical bleeding control techniques.

Surf Life Saving NSW trainers have also participated in TraumaSim’s NIFAT webinar, further supporting professional development and best-practice trauma training.

Why realism matters

In emergency care, confidence and readiness are built through practice. For Surf Life Saving NSW, the ability to pack a wound and control an arterial bleed made training scenarios far more realistic than previous methods.

This realism helps bridge the gap between classroom-based learning and the pressure of real-world response. For lifesavers, first aiders, paramedics, emergency responders and members of the public completing advanced courses, practical exposure to realistic bleeding control scenarios supports stronger learning outcomes and greater preparedness.

Outcomes

Since introducing TraumaSim products into relevant courses, Surf Life Saving NSW has strengthened its advanced training programs, including Remote First Aid, Advanced First Aid and Advanced Resuscitation.

The resources support improved practical skills, assessment quality and participant readiness. Surf Life Saving NSW has indicated that these courses are now stronger training products, with better-trained participants being endorsed.

Surf Life Saving NSW will continue using these resources as part of its training approach.

Advanced trauma resources enhance learning, build confidence, and better prepare our members to respond effectively when every second counts. Integrating advanced trauma resources into relevant courses strengthens practical skills and improves readiness for real-life emergencies.
