From St John Cadet to the Founder of TraumaSim

TraumaSim founder Nola Pearce didn’t begin her journey with a business plan or a product idea.
It began decades earlier, with a teenager in Adelaide who wanted to help people and learn how to save lives. That curiosity — sparked in the St John Cadet program in the 1970s — would quietly shape a path that eventually led to the founding of TraumaSim in 2008.

Nola Pearce as a St John Cadet in Adelaide, where her interest in first aid and training began.

Growing up in Adelaide, Nola Pearce joined the St John Cadet program while planning a future career in nursing. The program provided early training in first aid, leadership, and teamwork, but it also introduced her to something that would stay with her for years: simulation and moulage.

At the time, mock injuries were simple — playdough, fake blood, and basic makeup — but they made training scenarios feel real. Cadets also acted as role-players during mass-casualty exercises for St John Ambulance, gaining early exposure to the realities of emergency response. Although Nola didn’t realise it then, these experiences laid the foundation for everything that followed.

Early passion for first aid and realistic training

After completing a full nursing career, Nola returned to training and education in 2008 as a first aid and medic instructor. It was here that she became increasingly concerned by what she saw in the training environment.

Simulation was limited. Moulage was rarely used in Australia, and learners were often shielded from realistic injury imagery because it might be “upsetting”. From experience, Nola knew this approach could do more harm than good. When people encounter serious injuries for the first time without preparation, it can lead to hesitation, distress, and poor performance.

Realistic training doesn’t overwhelm learners — it prepares them.

From nursing to simulation and moulage

At the time, the United States was leading the way in moulage education, so Nola travelled to Nevada and Virginia to undertake specialised training. These experiences confirmed what she had long believed: realistic, well-designed simulation plays a critical role in building confidence, competence, and emotional readiness.

Not long after returning to Australia, Nola and a friend launched TraumaSim. Initially, it existed simply to support the medic courses they were running by providing realistic moulage materials.

Demand grew quickly.

Within a year, TraumaSim had expanded beyond its original purpose. Nola began running the company independently and stepped away from medic training entirely to focus on developing TraumaSim.

TraumaSim founder Nola Pearce and the founding of TraumaSim in 2008

Founded in 2008, TraumaSim was created to address a clear gap in emergency medical training: the lack of realistic, clinically accurate simulation tools. TraumaSim reflects the experience and values of TraumaSim founder Nola Pearce, shaped by decades of nursing, training, and simulation work.

As TraumaSim grew, so did its influence. When the company developed some of its early haemorrhage control training aids, nothing like them existed at the time. As the Emergency Tourniquet Trainer gained traction, copies began appearing across the market — some well made, others lacking realism or durability.

This pattern continued as new tools were introduced, reinforcing the importance of thoughtful design, clinical accuracy, and products created for genuine educational purpose.

Growing a global simulation company

Seventeen years on, TraumaSim is now in its 18th year, supplying simulation and moulage products to customers around the world. Over this time, the simulation industry itself has expanded rapidly, with both high-quality innovation and a growing number of low-quality alternatives entering the market.

Throughout this growth, TraumaSim has remained focused on:

  • clinical accuracy
  • durability
  • realism
  • meaningful educational outcomes

As TraumaSim founder Nola Pearce reflects on the company’s growth, the focus has always remained on realism, clinical accuracy, and meaningful training outcomes.

The company’s success has never been the result of one person alone. TraumaSim has brought together artists, clinicians, production experts, simulation specialists, and military and clinical collaborators, each contributing essential expertise to ensure products are realistic, credible, and fit for purpose.

A full-circle moment

Recently, TraumaSim supplied a full range of simulation and moulage materials to a St John youth program. That interaction prompted reflection on just how much of TraumaSim’s story began within St John. What started decades earlier in a cadet hall in Adelaide had, in many ways, come full circle.

“Supplying moulage materials to a St John youth program brought back a lot of memories. I never imagined, as a cadet, that those early experiences would eventually lead to TraumaSim. It really did feel like a full-circle moment.”

— Nola Pearce, Founder, TraumaSim

As TraumaSim continues into its 18th year, it remains deeply rewarding to see its products used in training environments around the world. Knowing that these tools may help someone feel more prepared, more confident, or better able to respond in a critical moment is what continues to drive the work forward.

For TraumaSim founder Nola Pearce, the company is not just a business, but the continuation of a path that began with first aid training, curiosity, and a desire to prepare people for real-world emergencies.

Nola’s early training through the St John Cadet program with St John Ambulance Australia played a formative role in shaping her approach to emergency training.

Haemorrhage Control Training Ukraine: Realism That Saves Lives

At TraumaSim, our mission is to equip responders with realistic training tools that save lives. Sometimes, fulfilling this mission takes us beyond our labs and offices into experiences that are challenging, humbling, and deeply rewarding. Our recent work supporting haemorrhage control training in Ukraine is a perfect example.

Delivering Critical Training Equipment to Ukraine

We had the privilege of donating haemorrhage control and trauma training equipment to the Interagency Tactical Medicine Center of the Defense and Security Forces of Ukraine. This donation required months of careful planning, coordination, and persistence. With the support of our trusted contacts on the ground, we successfully navigated complex freight and customs processes to ensure the equipment reached the responders who need it most. Learn more about our training equipment.

Haemorrhage Control Training Aids

Feedback from the Center

“I am pleased to confirm that the shipment has arrived safely after successful customs clearance. This support is invaluable to our team and to me personally.

The high-quality training aids you provide will significantly enhance the realism of our programs, ensuring our responders are prepared for the harshest realities of the field.

In our current environment, the impact of such high-quality training is measured directly in lives saved.

Receiving this donation feels like the best Christmas gift we could have asked for. It is a powerful gesture of solidarity that resonates deeply with all of us.”

Why Realistic Trauma Training Matters

Reading these words reminded us why realistic trauma and haemorrhage response training in Ukraine is essential. Critical interventions, trauma response, and lifesaving skills cannot be learned from a manual alone—they require hands-on practice, repetition, and confidence that comes from training with tools that closely reflect real-life injuries and scenarios. Learn more about international standards in trauma training.

A True Team Effort

This project was a true team effort. Months of logistical problem-solving, coordination with contacts in Ukraine, and careful planning from the TraumaSim team ensured the donation could be delivered safely and effectively. While our role may be small in the grand scope of ongoing efforts, knowing that our work helps responders save lives is profoundly rewarding. Meet the TraumaSim team.

Our Commitment to Saving Lives

At TraumaSim, we are proud to support those who train and respond under extraordinary circumstances. Realistic, hands-on training in Ukraine matters. Skills save lives. And we remain committed to providing high-quality tools that empower responders around the world to do their best work when it matters most.

TraumaSim Turns 15 with Glittering Reflections and Reviews

By Belinda Rennie | Operations Manager, TraumaSim

As we approached our 15-year milestone we spent time reflecting and reminiscing about the adventures over the years and the exceptional people we have had the privilege of working with.

The early years of TraumaSim were represented by a tenacious Nola Pearce, who’s hunger to provide the very best Moulage and realistic simulation ensured Nola and TraumaSim’s names were being spoken in excited tones throughout the corridors of our Australian Defence Force. As our reputation grew so did the exposure and the level of appreciation for what TraumaSim could bring to the training field.

15 years on we have worked with some of the most dedicated and advanced teams across a myriad of industries including: Military, Police, Emergency Services, Universities, Hospitals and the First Aid Training arena. All have posed their own challenges but TraumaSim have always stepped up to the challenge and delivered to the highest standard with world class services and products. The future looks bright with a growing global footprint but we have never forgotten where we came from and the people who helped us get to where we are today.

Reaching out to several of our past comrades we asked for some words to welcome us into the 15th year of our work life and the words that have been returned has been truly humbling and empowering. Nola and the Team at TraumaSim are proud of our humble beginnings but we are equally proud of the reputation we now possess. Please enjoy the following reflections and kind words sent to us by some but not all of our important friends, these words give you a glimpse into the importance of TraumaSim and express the depth of our contribution to saving lives:

Nathan Grumley – Warrant Officer Class One – Brigade Senior Medical Technician

Saving the life of a soldier is an uncommon gift beyond measure, it is an act of tenacity and heroism that touches the hearts of few.

The ability to deliver essential medical care and snatch our bravest from the cold fingers of death is an inspiring achievement that can only be attained through unyielding dedication to the highest standards, relentless training, and the tireless work of those who ensure that our first responders are equipped with the very best tools. To recreate and simulate the trauma experienced in combat wounding has prepared our best and brightest, and our bravest to face the uncertainty of combat, and act when the unforgiving minute demands our care.

It is with profound gratitude that I personally acknowledge the instrumental role played by Trauma Sim, central to which are the remarkable efforts of Nola and her exceptional team that has kept us safe when doing very dangerous work. Your personal support and unwavering commitment have undoubtedly been the difference between life and death for countless young soldiers on the battlefield.

In the harsh deserts of Afghanistan, the dense and unforgiving jungles of Southeast Asia, the chaotic urban landscapes of Iraq, and the pretty villages of the Pacific, your collective efforts have underpinned our ability to bring our friend’s home. The knowledge that you stand behind our soldiers, ready to empower them with the tools and expertise we need to return home to our families, is a source of immense comfort and reassurance. In preparation for the conflicts of the future your expertise is pivotal to our success.

Nola, you and your team are the unsung heroes, ensuring that our young lives are not prematurely cut short on these challenging battlegrounds. Your personal dedication to preserving life is a testament to the best of humanity, and we owe you an immeasurable debt of gratitude. Your tireless work, curiosity for innovation and unwavering support embodies the very essence of heroism, and for this, we are forever thankful. Congratulations on your every success, I look forward to doing great work with you again soon, and sharing a big warm hug.

Dustin Osborne – Co-Chair of the Law Enforcement Officer Medical Working Group at Australian Tactical Medical Association

Happy 15th!! This milestone event and your success generally is no surprise. Your dedication to creating your products continues to play a significant role in building educated, capable and resilient individuals who have the skills to save lives and reduce injury. It’s true humanitarian work. Thanks for what you do, Nola

Andy Panes Director – National Institute of First Aid Trainers – Paradise First Aid – The First Aid Shop – The First Aid Group

Nola, you have established yourself and TraumaSim as a global leader in the field of trauma simulation and moulage. It has been a pleasure to work with you and your team and watch your business grow. Congratulations on what you have achieved over the past 15 years and I look forward to seeing what still lies ahead for TraumaSim.

Sven Stollenwerk – Head of Sales – 1MOA – Germany

Happy 15th Anniversary! Nola, congratulations to this achievement! Although we know each other for less than two years now, we were fortunate to witness your passion for medical training at several exhibitions and events. TraumaSim not only offers great products, but also brings the experience and knowledge making the company unique. You and your team really live Realism and we are all looking forward to the next 15 years!

Greg Brown – General Manager – Education, ACT Ambulance Service

It would have been easy in the early days to confuse her as the Angel of Death; Afterall, whenever I saw her, she was covered in blood, packing stainless steel instruments, creating realistic looking extras from a chainsaw massacre film, and always searching for ways to make the blood spurt further! But in reality, it was just the lovely Nola, helping us train the next group of soldiers to deploy into harm’s way and to better treat their comrades. From day 1, her work was genius, her eye for detail exquisite, and her recognition of talent exceptional. Now, you cannot go to a medical conference anywhere in the world without seeing the influence of TraumaSim – and when you think medical effects, you think Nola. Happy work birthday, Nola!

Ben Royal Australian Army Medical Corps

Congratulations on your 15th birthday! TraumaSim’s incredible products have made a lasting impact on the training and lifesaving actions of many Australian Army personnel. Coupled with Nola’s passion and dedication to her craft, deploying Australian soldiers have benefitted from the last 15 years of innovation and excellence from the TraumaSim team. Thank you for your continued support – happy 15th birthday!

Elizabeth Mathews – OAM Director of Collective Training/Exercise Coordination & preparedness ACT

Trauma Sim – WOW what an organisation that has gone from strength to strength. All those years ago Nola when I first met you at one of our heath exercises as we prepared Defence personnel to deploy overseas. By creating realistic wound suites that they could manage under pressure as if they were in a live war fighting environment treating casualties. Your tenacity, infectious attitude towards your work, being able to test and adjust, your flexibility and adaptability to produce alternate solutions to enhance the battle scene was outstanding. I absolutely loved working with you and am in aww knowing what you have achieved over the years. Going strength to strength, backing yourself and constantly achieving greatness. I admire you and your beautiful nature and demeanour continues to impress all that come in contact with you. Huge congratulations on reaching this milestone.

Serge DeSilva – Ranasinghe Founder & Managing Editor – WA DEFENCE REVIEW

Congratulations to Nola Pearce and the team at TraumaSim for achieving such a monumental accomplishment! It is no mean feat to run a successful business for 15 years, which has grown from strength to strength and achieved export success too. WA DEFENCE REVIEW is proud to be associated with an enduring Australian success story, which has set an outstanding example to us all as to what perseverance means.

Robert Fowler – AERO Healthcare Associate Director – Sales

Congratulations to Nola Pearce and the TraumaSim team on their remarkable 15 years of dedicated service. Working with Nola has been an absolute pleasure, and her commitment to providing more realistic training and simulation products is truly inspiring. Your passion for improving practical skills training in the healthcare and emergency services fields is commendable. Here’s to a bright future filled with even more innovative solutions that save lives and enhance training. Best wishes for continued success!!

Bronwyn O’Hara Mediquip Healthcare Simulation Product Specialist – ANZ

I have felt extremely grateful to have known Nola for the past 10 years and have had the chance to work closely alongside her in most recent years. Nola is one of the most kind and loyal people I have met and her commitment to excellence is inspirational. I feel proud of everything she has accomplished over the years and can’t wait to see what the future holds for Trauma Sim. Congratulations on 15 years!!!

Bruce Edwards Ambassador to Ukraine & Moldova Australian Embassy – Kyiv

Congratulations to TraumaSim on its fifteenth birthday! The Australian Embassy was delighted to partner with TraumaSim in sourcing emergency torniquet training equipment to support the efforts of first aid practitioners and combat medics in Ukraine. We were overwhelmed by the generosity and willingness of Nola Pearce to bolster our own assistance, to expand our reach, and ensure the greatest number of people could benefit from the life-saving expertise and knowledge afforded by TraumaSim products.

Jeremy Holder Founder of TacMed Emergency Medical Equipment, Training & Services

After working with Nola for the past 15 years, I don’t think you’ll find a nicer person in the industry. I first worked with Nola as an Army Medic teaching soldiers massive bleeding control using her TQ Trainer and now 15 years later still using (and selling!) that same device to save lives. Congrats on this milestone.

Andrea Rembor Leader and part owner of Roraco Austria

Congratulation to this very supportive and innovative company! It is a great honour to have such a valuable partnership.

Thank you to all who have joined us on this journey, and we look forward to meeting new inspiring people as we continue our quest.

Restart a Heart Day 2020 @ TraumaSim Group

By Belinda Rennie | Operations Manager, TraumaSim

On Friday, 16th October, TraumaSim and Safe Response hosted a CPR information session in support of Restart a Heart Day.

Founded in 2017, Restart a Heart was established to raise awareness and educate the community about CPR and AEDs in the community. This year the theme and focus was on Call Push Shock.

Sadly, 30,000 Australians suffer from cardiac arrest each year and on average, only 1 in 10 survive. With more civilians trained in basic first aid, CPR and use of an AED, we can reduce these tragic statistics. After 10 minutes without intervention the damage caused by cardiac arrest is nearly irreversible.

Whilst COVID-19 remains a prevalent concern in today’s society, there is no need to let it stop you from responding to someone in need. The advice received is that CPR is encouraged on immediate family members and for those that are uncertain, breaths can be withheld as long as compressions are maintained.

Other scary statistics show that only 39% of women receive CPR compared to only 45% of men. Further research shows that bystanders lack confidence to respond to an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and the poor response on women may be due to a misunderstanding that women can suffer from cardiac arrest, that CPR could hurt or injure someone or that modesty is more important in this situation.

Almost all CPR manikins are plastic and flat-chested with the same neutral face and therefore most students do not learn how to perform CPR on a torso with breasts and may be less prepared to respond to a casualty effectively. It is appropriate to give a woman CPR in public and whilst it can be uncomfortable for all to expose bare breasts in a public space, it is important to push through this taboo and take the necessary action to save a life – they will thank you later !

At TraumaSim, we’re passionate about realism in training as we know it better mentally prepares students by improving skills and retention. This is why we invented The Manniskin, a joint innovation with SimpFX that is a realistic skin applied to the standard Little Anne manikins. It really was time for Little Anne to grow up !

We had the opportunity to introduce this new product to our local neighbours who joined us for Restart a Heart Day 2020 held at the TraumaSim premises in Perth, Western Australia.

Positive feedback was received from all attendees who were surprised by the statistics and, whilst some acknowledge that the breasts could be distracting initially, they were confident The Manniskin would assist break through the awkwardness, improve training and left confident that they could undertake CPR on a bystander, and potentially save the life a colleague, friend or family member.

Please see photos from the day below.

A COVID-19 success story : how we survived a global crisis

By Belinda Rennie | Operations Manager, TraumaSim

We acknowledge that 2020 has been a hugely challenging year for everyone, and our thoughts are with all of you around the world trying to manage and survive this ongoing pandemic.

At TraumaSim Group we have felt difficulties with the postponement of nearly all training and events globally, impacted further by tight travel and border restrictions around the world, ongoing freight & supply chain issues plus we experienced a near collapse in product sales.

Just prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, we acquired a sister company called Military Moulage Combat Injury Simulation in the USA and transition to this business and ability to service our customers remains a challenge.

However, with the support of our valued suppliers, distributors, customers and staff – we have not only survived, but have grown and continue to expand our team and product line!

Initially, we undertook all and any activity that would retain some form of cashflow and keep our valued team members working. This resulted in us bottling sanitiser for Woolworths and other freight logistic companies who were desperate for urgent distribution and we’re really proud to have helped in this way.

Despite the above, the business pushed forward and decided on growth and innovation as the way forward and, as a team, we have successfully;

  • moved to bigger & better premises,
  • invested in infrastructure & improved production facilities,
  • Revamped our brand and digital presence,
  • Engaged in Research & Development activities,
  • Developed new product lines & launched 3 x new training aids,
  • Undertook an internal restructure, improving efficiency & culture, and
  • Expanded employment & internal capabilities to include marketing, sales, customer service and operations.

Whilst risky business during the instability of a global crisis, the result of our hard work has seen an early recovery of domestic product sales and the establishment of new and exciting distribution partnerships in Italy, UK & Ireland with enquiries from Spain and Eastern Europe.

The TraumaSim Group are proud to have pushed through and are looking forward to continuing our path of growth, supporting our partners and customers around the globe.

Please see more via an interview with Nola Pearce who was featured in the WA Defence Review last year.
